The Piedmont sees the widest mix of cockroach species in the state. These are the ones we actually encounter around the lake, in roughly the order you’re likely to run into them.

• German cockroach — The one that matters most. Small, tan to light brown, about half an inch, with two dark stripes running lengthwise behind the head. This is the most common indoor cockroach in North Carolina homes. It lives in warm, humid spots close to food and water: in and around dishwashers, refrigerators, cabinets, and under sinks, and also outside the kitchen wherever those resources exist — washing machines, coffee makers, pantries. Females carry the egg case attached to the body until just before the nymphs hatch, which protects the next generation from most treatments and is a large part of why these infestations survive DIY efforts.
• American cockroach — The big reddish-brown one, roughly an inch to an inch and a half, with a pale yellowish figure-eight or band behind the head. Called palmetto bugs or water bugs locally. Lives in sewers, storm drains, crawl spaces, and damp exterior areas, and comes in through plumbing penetrations, floor drains, and gaps at the foundation.
• Smokybrown cockroach — Glossy dark brown to nearly black, a bit smaller than the American, with wings extending past the body. A strong flier drawn to light, so it shows up on porches and around exterior fixtures on humid summer nights. It breeds in tree holes, mulch and pine straw, gutters, crawl spaces, and attics, and is prevalent throughout the Piedmont. Critically, it needs high humidity to survive — drying out is what kills it — which is why shaded, wooded, well-mulched lake lots are such reliable smokybrown habitat and why moisture correction works so well against it.
• Wood cockroaches — Common on wooded lots and frequently misidentified. Males fly toward lights, especially in late spring and early summer, and they arrive on firewood. The important point: they do not infest or breed indoors. A wood roach on the porch in May is a nuisance, not an infestation, and treating the house for it accomplishes nothing.
• Oriental cockroach — Dark brown to black, slow-moving, tied to cool damp spaces: crawl spaces, drains, and under decks and stoops. Present here but encountered less often than the three species above.
• Brown-banded cockroach — An indoor breeder like the German, but less common. Prefers warm, drier, elevated spots: upper cabinets, closet shelves, behind picture frames, inside electronics.
